The Inuit people of northern Canada fear that their income from the seal hunt will dry up because of an import ban on seal products by the European Union. The indigenous population considers the hunt a lifeline and an important part of Inuit heritage. An expedition with hunter Joshua Kango.
The Inuit of northern Canada suffer the consequences of global warming first-hand. The sea ice is becoming impassable and traditional hunting areas are getting smaller. “For us, climate change is something that we live with every day.”
Members of the indigenous Haida population are reclaiming human remains of their ancestors from museums in North America. They bring the remains home to give their ancestors proper burials. “The way other people have treated us was totally disrespectful.”
Abandoned ghost towns with weathered totem poles are a prize sight of Haida Gwaii, the dagger-shaped archipelago off Canada’s Pacific Northwest coast. The UNESCO world heritage site beckons adventurous travellers. But beware of adverse weather conditions.
A historic voyage through the Northwest Passage finds that the icy north isn’t so icy any more. As a result of global warming, the age- old dream of a navigable Northwest Passage might just come true after all. For world trade, it would be a breakthrough.
